Keyboard Cable FAQ

1. What Keyboard Cable is compatible with HE magnetic keyboard

Most HE gaming keyboards have a high-performance polling rate which can reach 8,000 Hz—sending data up to every 0.125ms. Pairing a keyboard cable that allows an 8KHz polling rate unleashes the full power of such an HE keyboard. Using a traditional coiled cable that has a polling rate of 1000 HZ will limit the data transmission speed between the PC and the HE keyboard, hence limiting the overall performance.

2. Are these keyboard cables compatible with my mechanical keyboard?

Yes. All cables in this collection use USB-C on the keyboard end and USB-A on the host end, making them compatible with the vast majority of modern mechanical keyboards. Artisan keyboard cables work with 99% of mechanical keyboards on the market, as almost all keyboards use USB 2.0. If your keyboard has a Micro-USB port, feel free to contact us before ordering and we'll confirm compatibility.

3. What is an aviator connector, and do I need one?

The aviator connector (also called GX16 or GX12) is the large, retro-style metal connector that splits the cable into two detachable halves — one running to your keyboard, one to your PC. It makes it easy to unplug your keyboard without disturbing the cable routing on your desk, and gives practically infinite possibilities for color combinations. Most cables in our collection include this detachable connector as standard

4. What's the difference between a coiled and a straight keyboard cable?

A coiled cable springs back to a compact resting length when not in use, keeping your desk tidy and tangle-free. The natural looped design prevents the cable from becoming tangled and reduces the overall hassle of using a wired mechanical keyboard. Straight cables offer a cleaner, minimal look for setups where the cable is hidden. From a performance standpoint, both are identical — the choice comes down to aesthetics and desk management preference.

5. Will a custom keyboard cable improve my typing or gaming performance?

In terms of raw data transfer, from a technical standpoint, not significantly — but from a visual perspective, unquestionably. All cables here support USB 2.0 (480 Mbps), which is more than sufficient for any keyboard. Where artisan cables shine is in build quality: premium braided sleeving resists wear and kinking, while the coiled design reduces stress on the connectors over time.

6. How long are the keyboard cables, and will they reach my PC?

Our coiled cables have a resting coil section plus a straight tail, giving a total extended length of approximately 1.5–1.8m (around 5–6 feet) when stretched — enough for most desktop setups. The coil design keeps things compact while yielding extra length when needed. If you have a tower PC on the floor or a particularly deep desk, check individual product pages for exact stretched lengths, or reach out to us

7. Can I use these cables with non-keyboard devices like a Steam Deck, numpad, or USB hub?

Absolutely. You can use them for trackballs, Steam Decks, numpads, and different types of docks — just make sure your device runs on USB 2.0. Many customers pick up a second cable to match their numpad or macropad to their main keyboard cable for a coordinated desk aesthetic.
