Keyboard Switch Stems Explained: Types, Compatibility and How to Choose
The stem is the moving part inside a keyboard switch — the piece that travels down when you press a key and carries the keycap on top. It is also the single component that determines whether a switch feels linear or tactile, and whether your keycaps will fit at all.
What the Stem Does
- Holds the keycap — the mount shape decides compatibility.
- Creates the feel — a smooth stem gives a linear switch; a stem with a raised bump gives a tactile switch.
- Shapes the sound — stem material and the length of the legs change the pitch and character.
- Controls dampening — silent switches have rubber pads moulded into the stem.

Linear vs Tactile Stems
Look at the side of the stem. A linear stem has a straight, uninterrupted profile — the contact leaf slides along it without resistance. A tactile stem has a bulge; the leaf has to ride over it, which creates the bump you feel.
That is the entire difference. Everything else about the two switches can be identical.

Stem Wobble
Stem wobble is the play between the stem and the housing. Excessive wobble makes keycaps feel loose and adds rattle to the sound. It is one of the clearest markers of switch quality, and it is where premium switches earn their price. Switch films reduce it slightly by tightening the housing.
